Community work has changed a lot over the years. Some of the tools are different, the expectations from companies are different, and the profession itself is much more established than it used to be. But some of the challenges probably feel very familiar no matter when you entered the field.

For the relaunch of CMX Connect San Francisco, we’re bringing together community professionals at different stages of their careers to compare notes on how the work has evolved.

We’ll talk with seasoned community leaders, mid-career practitioners, and people who are newer to the profession about what they expected when they started, what surprised them, what’s gotten easier or harder, and what they think is coming next.

We also want this to be a conversation with the room, not just a panel to watch. We’ll start with small-group conversations and bring audience perspectives into the panel throughout the evening, so people at different stages of their careers can learn from one another.

If you’ve been doing this work for years, it’s a chance to remember what starting out actually felt like and hear how newer practitioners see the field today. If you’re newer to community, you’ll hear from people who have already lived through several versions of the profession and probably made some of the mistakes you’re trying to avoid.
