A community can have hundreds—or even thousands—of members and still feel inactive.
People may join the group, attend an event once, and disappear. Others may participate occasionally but never feel connected enough to contribute. And only a small percentage may eventually become the people who organize events, welcome newcomers, share knowledge, volunteer, speak, mentor others, and help the community grow.
So what turns an audience into a community?
This session explores the fundamentals of community building and engagement, with a focus on how community leaders can create environments where people don't just attend—they participate and eventually take ownership.
We'll look at the journey of a community member from their first interaction with the community to becoming an active contributor or advocate.
Participants will explore questions such as:
We'll also discuss the difference between running events and building communities.
Events are often the most visible part of a community, but they're only one piece of the larger ecosystem. A successful community creates multiple ways for people to participate—whether that's attending an event, asking a question, sharing knowledge, helping another member, speaking at a session, volunteering, or simply connecting with others.
The session will encourage participants to think beyond traditional metrics such as registrations and attendance and consider deeper indicators of community health: participation, relationships, contribution, belonging, and ownership.
This will be an interactive session rather than a traditional lecture. Participants will have opportunities to reflect on their own experiences as community members, discuss what makes communities engaging, and think about how they can apply these ideas to communities they lead or participate in.
By the end of the session, participants should have a clearer understanding of how to move people through the community journey:
Discover → Join → Participate → Contribute → Belong → Advocate
The ultimate goal is simple:
Don't just build a community that people attend. Build one that people want to be part of.
