This meetup is a collaborative evening where we will work together to define the things that our respective communities value, and how that can inform the identity of community members.

People join communities for many different reasons, but common to all members will be shared values and identity - these are inherent in the DNA of each community, and understanding them is crucial for any community manager. At this meetup, we will look at the membership identity framework outlined by Charles Vogl in his book, The Art of Community, and work through it for each of our own communities. We will do this collaboratively and help each other to establish a defined membership identity for our respective communities.

This framework involves first identifying the values that your community holds dear - these are the things that make your community what it is and set it apart from others. After that, we will answer three questions that relate to what is expected of community members in terms of how they should engage with the community.

Defining a membership identity like this is more than just a fun exercise - with this in hand you will be able to better serve your community as you can be clear about what is expected of members, as well as what they will gain from being a part of your community. More than that even, by working through this process collaboratively at this meetup you will have the chance to get to know other members of our group better and build stronger connections within the CMX Cape Town community itself.
